In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. Folding up shop and switching to a new market: Talent/Performance Management, new product lines not tied to e-learning, services. Acquiring another LMS or e-learning vendor. It was a myth.

I have seen continued interest and downloads for open source AR tool kits. If you are still a huge fan of ILT or believe a blended learning approach is necessary, why stick only to PowerPoint, handouts and long talks? Vendors new to the space focusing on developing and launching AR apps for the mobile crowd.

The fastest growing segment on Facebook is 55 to 65 year old women. There is a mid segment of the vendors in the LMS/LCMS or learning portal markets that offer some features of social learning, as part of their standard system or as their “add on modules&#. I rarely recommend 100%, a product, but I will on this one.

E-Learning development houses need to be able to demonstrate a clear value in their services. Why should companies go with e-Learning vendors when rapid e-Learning tools are available? Have the e-Learning vendor create the first few custom programs. I completely agree with this.

Vendors and sadly, companies who purchase their products, believe that since someone can open up their web browser and click to view pages, they can figure it out. Anything that reduces calls into a company’s tech support (and thus lower the costs for that vendor’s customer support) will be incorportad.

Many in the education market are still in love with open source systems, such as Moodle. I am projecting the analytical part to significantly increase and to expand the capability to use solutions such as online storage (which a few vendors are offering) and product like Dropbox and CalenGoo. Vendors were saying, lets “wait on those&# or “our customers are not requesting them, so we are holding off&#. Social learning? If they were doing it, Facebook like page, a crummy blog that looks nothing like a real blog, a Twitter like feed, maybe RSS, text chat and YouTube functions and upload/download angle.

A trend that is happening in the LMS market more so than in the other e-learning markets, is the failure to follow their path of success. I am seeing many vendors whose products were built for SMB (and more aligned on the lower side of mid size companies) who are now pushing into the mid/upper mid to large size customer band.
