If your goal is just to post the course on a server and let people access it, just for the sake of learning and you don’t care about tracking of any sort – then no, you do not need any compliance standard. LMSs are starting to make assessment tools standard, and again some can be quite robust.

I might have a social learning component in my system, with the standard FB like page or something similar and with “groups&#. What though, have they really learned? As a result, you now have another channel for learning. Best of all, as technology evolves, this form of learning evolves too.

The latter is slowly gaining speed, which is an advantage to LMS vendors who have a CAT in their own product – which is SCORM,PENS/IMS compliant. Over 98% of the LMS/LCMS/learning platform have at least one compliance standard, so why use a RCAT that doesn’t? Privacy issues continue to plague Facebook.

For those of uninitiated, Online Educa Berlin, is an e-learning conference geared towards higher education and with some corporate. If you are an e-learning vendor in the higher education space and doing or planning on doing business in Europe, this is the place to be. Lacks compliance standards.

The problem is that many LMS vendors either don’t know what it is, never ask people or tell them about its on/off synch capability with mobile devices (key for learning – tablets), especially the iPad (which dominates the market). Toss in privacy as a factor too. Wait and See. You can too.
