Forums vs. Social Networks?

Social Network Examples are Ning and KickApps. It's having people ready to help/guide/mentor users. So, I'm trying to figure out what's going to be the right software / service to adopt, but I'm also trying to think about the differences in: Forum / Threaded Discussion / Group Examples are Google Groups and Yahoo Groups.

Web 2.0 Applications in Learning

I didn't ask questions which would help to better identify participants. Then to the help desk. The participants were Learning Professionals from a cross section of Corporations, Academia, Military, Government (IRS was well represented and a little scary) and Non-profits. Then, maybe open it up to subject matter experts.
