Forums vs. Social Networks?

Social Network Examples are Ning and KickApps. It's having people ready to help/guide/mentor users. So, I'm trying to figure out what's going to be the right software / service to adopt, but I'm also trying to think about the differences in: Forum / Threaded Discussion / Group Examples are Google Groups and Yahoo Groups.

But Facebook , LinkedIn , Ning and IntroNetworks are all great tools for having academically focused learning communities in an online setting. Begin with a policy of including each student in discussions. Extending discussions outside of class.

Switching topics, does anyone know of a company making good use of e-mentoring? And switching again, the cover story in the current Fast Company is about ning. Ning’s software is another agile dancing bear. Essentially, a community-in-a-box, Ning is a snap to set up. Amazing growth rate.

However, when we just did this for the LA CTO Forum , we created a LinkedIn group so that members could search profiles and created a private Ning community for discussions, events, and communication. I often find that Ning isn't that great for specialized content. The question mentions "unique content". long answer expected!)
