Just a quick note as I head from ATD TechKnowledge in San Jose to Learning Technologies in London…. TechKnowledge was a good event this year. And we had good questions about the underlying technologies employed by LRS vendors like, “Are they using NoSQL solutions or traditional databases? And what’s preferable?”

As I was walking around the Expo floor yesterday, I was surprised by a LMS vendor that had some “What were they Thinking?&# If you are attending TechKnowledge, you will surely figure out the vendor if you are walking around and talking to vendors. Module Advertisement and Mobile Learning. Uh, excuse me?

Sometimes it is a result of the vendor, other times it is a failure of due diligence on the part of the soon to be customer. The vendor’s salesperson tells you want you want to hear. I expect nothing less from the vendor. At one time, vendors were honest, stating “white papers&# as marketing materials.

When shopping for tools I recommend that instead of looking at a list of features, you build the same mini module with each tool. Then you can test three things: Software : Using the same basic module for each application allows you to do a better “apples-to-apples” comparison. A simple checklist won’t reflect those things.

The titles lack specificity and I get the feeling that combined with great marketing from tool vendors, ID in many orgs has been watered down to 80% assembler, 2% strategy, 18% whatever else is required.
