Adobe took over Captivate around version 3 or 4 (I cannot recall which one exactly). I spent hours on the phone with their support because of technical glitches up to version 6. What I loved were the software simulations that I could create and how impressive (and useful) they were for clients. Nothing changed.

Their version 11 release out later this year will make it even more usable.) So many features have been added over the years that it feels a little disjointed to me. (Look for that to change in version 2013.) Storyline wins because it provides three options with one publish: Flash, Storyline mobile player for the iPad, or HTML5.

We saw that the Articulate 360 component enables the development of high quality software simulations and e-learning assessments. Presenter 360 comes with an easy-to-use window that allows you to include navigation elements, branching, playlists, and Player tabs. Learners can be allowed to skip Player navigation.

Whenever a comparison of eLearning authoring tools is published, Captivate still is considered to be the best tool for creation of software tutorials. I have been choosing it many years ago (with version 1) for that feature as well. You cannot have a standalone version easy to distribute as is the case for pure video files.

Studio ’13 is a very nice upgrade that features new Engage templates, additional quiz questions (including drag-and-drop), feedback layers, HTML5 publishing, characters, and a unified player, among other things. ( The new version can publish to Flash, HTML5, and the Articulate Mobile Player, much like Storyline.
