Both SCORM and xAPI are content standards used to create eLearning courses. Tin Can, otherwise known as xAPI, was developed in 2013 (over a decade after SCORM was released). After all, what’s the difference between SCORM and xAPI? And if you’re using SCORM, does it make sense to convert all of your eLearning to xAPI?

SCORM’s premise, not what it can or cannot do, was its huge premise of interoperability—far more so than AICC. whose background is firmly in instructional design and technology. In the late 80s, AICC, the predecessor to SCORM, was born. Why would anyone still want to use AICC? The end result became xAPI.

In October 2013, an eLearning Guild report showed the most common authoring tools were Adobe Captivate, TechSmith Camtasia, Articulate Storyline, Articulate Studio, and Trivantis Lectora, and those tools are still leaders in this market. Is there a preference or reason for choosing xAPI, AICC, SCORM over the other?
