Whenever a comparison of eLearning authoring tools is published, Captivate still is considered to be the best tool for creation of software tutorials. It is a purely passive tutorial. Use case: if you want to offer more in-depth explanation to the video tutorial, more control to the learner including KC checks with remediation.

However to record a Video Demo or a Software simulation you did have to edit the AdobeCaptivate.ini file. In Captivate 2017 this is no longer necessary, thanks to the Adobe team! If Flash player is enabled in your browser, you can test this movie (SWF) online in my personal blog. It was a solution, but bit cumbersome.
