Instructional designers were getting ready to be in high demand, especially in the corporate world. Instructional technologists was a term, many folks had heard of. The dominating authoring tool by far, was Authorware. There are even fans today of Authorware, who if it was still around, would bounce right into it.

Instructional design was actually being used. The majority of people creating the courses used authoring tools, such as Authorware (difficult to learn, but robust), Dazzler Max (I used it, learning curve though), Lectora (difficult to learn) and many others that existed then. Because of the way the courses were designed.

The biggest problem facing the industry in the past few years are the lack of course authoring tools for e-learning developers and instructional designers. Embed audio, images and Flash objects. Tools these days come in three flavors. It’s free.

Is it PowerPoint converted to Flash? Microsoft Word converted to Flash? Macromedia Authorware and similar products. While some could argue that Authorware was a RCAT, I disagree. Instructional designers who come from the paper based development or the creation of content for instructor led training.

Accepts any courses built in any content authoring tools that are SCORM & AICC compliant – so you can upload and sell your courses that you built in Articulate, Captivate, even open source authoring tools (but they must be standards compliant). Add audio, video, images if you want – even Flash. I was blown away.
