Instructional designers were getting ready to be in high demand, especially in the corporate world. Instructional technologists was a term, many folks had heard of. The dominating authoring tool by far, was Authorware. There are even fans today of Authorware, who if it was still around, would bounce right into it.

My posts around the Beginning of Long Slow Death of Flash and my post from a CTO perspective that I Cannot Bet on Flash for new development stirred up quite a bit of response. And that Flash provides things that you can’t do in HTML/JavaScript. However, there are some pretty amazing things you can do without Flash.

I “grew-up&# in eLearning world using Director/Authorware and then moving into Flash/HTML (PPT was “off-limits&# ). In the past few years I’ve started using Articulate and Captivate to do the heavy lifting and using Flash more for specific parts of the overall course.

Instructional design was actually being used. The majority of people creating the courses used authoring tools, such as Authorware (difficult to learn, but robust), Dazzler Max (I used it, learning curve though), Lectora (difficult to learn) and many others that existed then. Because of the way the courses were designed.

They took a premise of strong course design that allows interactivity and engagement, with knowledge of ADDIE or at least some basic ID understanding, and flipped it into a PPT template so that you can create quickly your courses and get them online. So you know my perspective, since my start in e-learning I have always been both a designer and developer. Although my degree is in instructional design I have worked in corporate training departments where I am responsible for both. They provided just enough to make us dangerous with HTML, Flash, Photoshop and Authorware.
