To understand the history of the LMS, there are five items that drove it. CBT Prior to online learning known then as WBT, and then the latter term of e-learning (vendors today, use it to refer to content that is online), there was CBT. Other options were universities who went online, via Lotus Notes. It was a university.

Existing Adoption At the very start I asked the audience for examples of where they were currently using these tools as part of learning solutions. IBM I only briefly mentioned how other organizations are adopting these tools in a big way - The Wall Street Journal - June 18 2007 - social networking at IBM 26,000 registered blogs.

Some SBL classes have tests – timed or must be completed by Saturday for example. I have seen SBL courses – i.e. classes used with Lotus Notes, so you do not have to have a LMS to have a SBL. Heavily used in the corporate, non-profit, association, non-academia/education world (over 90% and growing).
