The initial person who thought buying SumTotal was a great idea (initially it was) and then dumped it for a fortune to Skillsoft (another great idea), which in turn was someone at Skillsoft thinking this was a great idea, which turned out to be false and was a factor in Skillsoft going into bankruptcy due to the albatross known as SumTotal.

LMS Products of the Year 2010. A lot of great products out there this year, new updates and latest versions; new companies, new services and just some real innovation. Big Dog (Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, Cornerstone OnDemand, Learn.com). These standout to me. I include Learning Portals, LCMSs, as part of the mix.

Old-school LMS companies (like SumTotal , Plateau , Learn.com , GeoLearning and Certpoint ) were acquired by much larger talent and HR-suite providers like SAP/SuccessFactors , Infor , Oracle and IBM. Costly, labor-intensive upgrades and maintenance fees. Well, everything except talent management solutions. Don’t Ditch It.

They were expensive to purchase, implement, maintain, host, upgrade and replace. Oracle acquired Taleo who had acquired Learn.com and the list goes on. The cloud enables new LMS vendors to create and support one product that all customers use providing economies of scale in research, customer support and required investment capital.
