Day 2 @LSCON, Nice keynote and I finally understand TinCan, Experience API, Scorm, ADL, IACC and CMI-5…….

Challenge to Learn

Eric Berg of Lingos got on stage to announce the 2013 global give back competition, I’m an ambassador for Lingos, it is a great organization that helps non-profit organizations that work internationally with eLearning facilities. Later on the ADL was formed and they wanted a more extended standard, based on the AICC specs. So the ADL developed Scorm in a different (technical) way and we ended up with two standards. Day 2 of the conference.

TOP 11 DISRUPTIVE E-LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES FOR 2013

Tin Can API is a new and evolving learning technology specification (from ADL – the SCORM people). In addition, it offers lot more features opening up the door to a whole lot of possibilities that make learning professionals excited. Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is a recent development that is powered by Cloud Computing technology. Tin Can API & the Future of E-Learning

This standard is being developed by Rustici Software (with a world-wide active community participating and contributing) for Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) – the keepers of SCORM. However, ‘Experience API’ is ADL’s official name for this standard. Interactions During Training : This lists a few exciting ideas on the capabilities that Tin Can API opens up in the area of interacting during training programs.

Got SCORM?

ICS Learning

Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) has the complete specification (all 400+ pages of it) readily available on their site, but I was looking for a quick, “get your hands dirty” explanation that skipped all the mumbo-jumbo and would let me dive in and start trying things out. The SCORM specification, developed by Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL – [link] is a set of rules that learning management systems (LMS) and learning content follow in order to be compatible with each other.

This independence opens up many possibilities. Open Standards. For example, different groups such as the Aircraft Industry CBT Committee (AICC), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, (IEEE), IMS Global Learning Consortium and the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL) have developed specifications for the packaging and delivery of training content so that it is more independent and transportable. Why SCORM 2004 failed & what that means for Tin Can

eFront

Sign #3: ADL itself heavily supports Tin Can as the successor of SCORM.[4]. SCORM 2004 had to change in order to adapt to such a dramatically different environment and rather than do that ADL decided to save itself the trouble and start from scratch through what we now know as Tin Can or Experience API (xAPI). Nothing is perfect though as ADL admits [5]. An interesting decision regarding Tin Can is that ADL hired a company to drive the Tin Can project (Rustici Software).

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a great open online learning site, CDC Learning Connection , also added it to the Free eLearning page. I also learned Tin Can API is also being called ExperienceAPI, but it depends on who you talk to, ADL or Rustici. I recently attended the MedBiquitous Conference at Johns Hopkins. This conference focuses on technology standards in health care education (conference hash tag - #Medbiq2013 ).

Three Reasons its Time for Our Platforms to Evolve

Training Industry

We can imagine that learning technology could be many things beyond a person sitting at a desktop computer with a browser open. This is why the collaboration announced recently between ADL and AICC on Tin Can is such a huge deal. Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) has been supporting the community in building out the Tin Can API specification. When you take a step back, it’s a little funny that so many people are talking about standards in learning technology right now.

These are measureable outcomes of an open source community that has been lovingly and painstakingly attended by the US Department of Defense and its particular initiative, Advanced Distributed Learning. It is proving that open government practices, a pro-entrepreneurial approach and an authentic embrace of open source can stimulate innovation, enable implemented approaches to complex and serious challenges, and catalyze economic opportunities.
