8 Things we MUST do in 2013 to seize the potential of mLearning

mLearning Revolution

However we need more from our Industry and it’s my hope that 2013 will be the year we fully immerse ourselves into what I call the ‘ Post-eLearning era ‘ and seize the potential of mLearning. With that said, here are 8 things I believe we must do in 2013 to leverage mobile and advance mobile learning: 1. More than anything else the mobile revolution is about adopting a new mindset, a new way of looking at things and being open to the new world around us.

Open Source LMSs Facts and Insight

eLearning 24-7

One of the areas that always gain interest and usage are open source systems, that is to say, free open source code (some are not), to which any organization, company, educational setting, government and so forth can build their own system (often noted as home-grown) and do what they wish with it.

The past tense of open badges

E-Learning Provocateur

Some commentators are heralding open badges as the nemesis of the college degree. As Mark Smithers observes… “It’s interesting that the reaction to open badges from senior academic managers is often to dismiss them as being child like and akin to collecting a badge for sewing at scouts.” Of course, open badges and college degrees are not mutually exclusive. In contrast, open badges are task oriented.

mLearning has, slowly but surely, been creating a niche for itself in corporate training and learning. Even a decade ago mLearning was being created and utilized for learning – though sparingly. But in the past few years it has emerged as a sustainable learning platform. In addition to providing uninterrupted access, mLearning also provides a more learner-centric approach where the learner can assess his or her own needs and learn accordingly.

Microsoft Office: 2013 Open for Preview

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by AJ George  Last week  Microsoft announced its latest version of Microsoft Office  and opened it for  customer preview. If, however, you're still running Windows XP or Vista, you're out of luck, as Office 2013 is only being offered for users running Windows 7 or newer. While it does not improve many application features, Office 2013 does clarify what Microsoft plans to do in the cloud to compete with Google's cloud services.

BETT Show 2013

Moodle Journal

Given that I do still retain a very active presence in virtual worlds and that includes Second Life and Open Simulator, it was a shame that these did not seem to be in evidence. Made my way to the BETT show and first time at Excel center for me anyway, even bumped into a couple of people I knew there, had a catch-up, always good. A great deal to see in a day, and I was impressed by the turn out of resources particularly for robotics and science, very impressive, very encouraging.

Open Badges: What it is and Why it Matters

To help accomplish this, the Mozilla Open Badges initiative was born. I could write a few sentences about Open Badges, but I believe the description on their website sums it up perfectly: Get recognition for learning that happens anywhere. With the Open Badges API, users can earn their points and badges across multiple domains, but take their record of achievement with them wherever they go. The concept behind Open Badges just makes sense, and it’s pretty timely.

10 resources I enjoyed in February 2013

Jane Hart

Although I tweet links to interesting resources as I find them, and collate them in my 2013 Reading List , the important thing for me about curation is also taking some time to analyse what I’ve found to try and make sense of it all, and consider how it adds to my own thinking and practice. So here is my selection from February 2013. Here are a couple of snippets from two others I found useful reading: Working from home , Nigel Paine, 27 February 2013.

2 Essential Characteristics of an LMS in 2013

TinCan opens the doors to many new avenues, but it also closes the door on a few other things – well, hopefully closes the door. This is a big year in the realm of elearning, especially with the rapid growth of MOOCs and new technology hitting the scene. As such, we can reasonably expect some shifts in the learning space paradigm across many areas. One of the biggest driving forces behind this eventual shift is the formal introduction of TinCan API.
