AICC and SCORM Compliance: The Benefits for Your e-Learning

Trivantis

The Benefits of Making Your e-Learning AICC and SCORM Compliant . The lab combined the work of existing standards organizations like the AICC , IMS and the IEEE LTSC into a cohesive reference model. SCORM versus AICC. Another standard you may come across is AICC, although SCORM is much more predominant in the industry today. One of the biggest differences between AICC and SCORM is the way that each communicates with your LMS.

The ongoing work of learning standards

Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). And then the IMS (an initiative of Educause before being spun out as an independent effort) started creating standards, as did the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the major body in the US responsible for computing standards. The goal is to track a richer suite of information about behaviors.

Distribute courses to LTI LMSs with Content Controller v2.1

Rustici Software

SCORM 2004, AICC, and xAPI-based “Tin Can” packages, as well as custom content using our Rustici Cross Domain API (we called it SDXD at the time). SCORM 2004, or AICC. As of Content Controller v2.1 , you can also share your content as an IMS LTI tool provider. If you want to create your content using all the neat features and xAPI-based results tracking available in, say, cmi5, you can still make it available in an LMS that only supports SCORM 1.2.

The initial learning technology standards came out from the AICC. Several other initiatives include IEEE (which is pretty much the US based effort on electric and electronic technology standards to the international stage), and the IMS efforts from academia. This standard enables tracking and analytics beyond the course. While there are people who claim to be leaders in elearning (and some are), there is another whole group who flies under the radar.

There are two key types of LMS users: Administrators: Administrators are responsible for managing the LMS, which involves a combination of multiple tasks, including creating courses and learning plans, assigning specific learner groups to specific learning plans, and tracking their learners’ progress. Track learner progress. Certifications and Retraining: The LMS should allow for the tracking and management of all certification and retraining activities (e.g., LMS Tracking.

Day 5: xAPI and more – what next for SCORM?

LearnUpon

eLearning past: AICC. On day one of our series, we learned that AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) can be considered the first eLearning standard, used to track how learners progress through course content. While many eLearning vendors still support AICC, the standard is usually a legacy of older platforms and businesses. Organizations that implement AICC have typically been around for a while and began using it when it was still common.

All of the e-Learning specifications are captured- from SCORM and AICC to IMS, PENS and LETSI RTWS. Companies around the world from LMS providers to content publishers use Rustici’s products to solve the challenge of conforming to SCORM and AICC specifications. This seems to be “press release” week for me but some great things are happening like the Innovations in Clinical Research Worksho p I blogged about the other day. Well today, two more announcements.

Q&A - eLearning Standards Especially SCORM

Tony Karrer

You want to implement your courseware to the SCORM standard if you plan to have it launched and/or tracked under an LMS. One case is building a one-off course that needs simple tracking/reporting and will never run under an LMS. If you won't ever need to run it under an LMS, then SCORM is overhead you don't need (see Tracking Without an LMS ). In these cases, I'm not tracking and likely it's not under the LMS.

Five Myths of Social Learning

This has been a topic discussed for ages (there is actually an absolutely excellent recent conversation on George Siemens’ blog with additional commentary by Jane Hart on her own blog as well as on the Learning Conversations blog ) and I won’t spend much time on it except to say if you need tracking capabilities, an LMS is your only option. The first official eLearning content standard, AICC was developed by the Aviation Industry CBT Committee in 1993 as a CD-ROM based standard. A predecessor to SCORM, AICC was difficult to work with and many steps were required to get content in the format running in a learning management system (LMS). A cloud-based LMS is a web-based platform that helps companies to deliver, track, and report on eLearning. Popular eLearning content standards include SCORM, xAPI, and AICC.
