Learning Management Systems and You

Association eLearning

People always want to know how their association could benefit from a Learning Management System (LMS). How are you supposed to compile all of your association’s training material in one, easy-to-access place, and still finish everything else that’s on your plate? Find yourself a good LMS. Cue the 1950’s film strip… “Learning Management Systems and You!”. An LMS is a system for managing learning.

The Content or the LMS? Which Comes First?

Association eLearning

Without content the LMS is an empty cookie jar. Before EITHER the content or LMS is considered, it is important to step back and think: Who am I providing this content for and why do they need it? If you cannot answer either of those questions, then neither content NOR an LMS will help you provide successful educational material. Once you have a clear direction, understanding what type of content will be most relevant will help you select an LMS. You need both.

Getting Started with Online Member Education

Association eLearning

Way back when I was just a marketing minion working in development at a nonprofit, I used to attend workshops and classes that would help me learn more about my industry. Although I didn’t join the associations that put these things on, I voraciously ate up the content they were offering, as often as my employer would allow me to attend. I have since moved on, from marketing minion to marketing maven, but have never forgotten the associations that taught me a thing or two.

Why an Open Source LMS Isn’t Always the Best Option

Association eLearning

You’re shopping for an LMS and behold FREE OPEN SOURCE LMS pops up. Yes, it sounds like a good idea, but if you own a business or run an association, you might want to think twice about open source. If it’s free, it may be because it’s an over-simplified bare bones LMS, counting on you to customize and make the platform what it should be. If it’s a free open source LMS then it’s probably not coming with technical support. A proprietary LMS vendor.

The Benefits of SaaS: Hosted LMS

Association eLearning

So, when an LMS provider say they have a SaaS LMS, they’re really saying we offer a cloud LMS. Because you aren’t purchasing hardware and hiring IT support staff to go along with your software solution, your up-front costs are lower than they would be if you simply purchased an LMS that was not hosted elsewhere.
