I’ve used a bunch of desktop authoring tools – Lectora, Dreamweaver, Authorware, Captivate, and Articulate to name a few. I haven’t really used a lot of web-based authoring tools though. I wish it had been around when I was pulling my hair out learning Authorware. Flash templates.

PowerPoint is not E-Learning and shouldn’t be used as your course tool/development – For whatever reason, there are people who have been around online learning for years, who still see PPT as a means for the creation of content – i.e. courses. Will they spur visceral responses? Who knows. I mean what is visceral anyway?

I came into rapid e-learning from the world of Authorware and Flash where building courses took a lot of time and cost a lot more money. Today, most authoring solutions fall into the rapid e-learning bucket. So I’d say the authoring tools that were maligned ten years ago are now the tools of choice.

Brought down by the tool or tools, another retorted back. The weapons including Authorware, Macromedia Director, DazzlerMax, Toolbook were the ones that separated the knights from the common folk. Eventually the land saw Macromedia Breeze and Dreamweaver enter the lands, with these items called templates. Hip Hip, Hip!

The majority of people creating the courses used authoring tools, such as Authorware (difficult to learn, but robust), Dazzler Max (I used it, learning curve though), Lectora (difficult to learn) and many others that existed then. Dreamweaver then added templates, allowing folks to create courses. Yep, readily available.

Someone did the instructional design, someone else worked on graphics, and then we had a programmer who built the courses in Authorware or some other application. While today’s software has made the job easier, but it’s also made it more challenging for the person who has to develop and deliver elearning courses.
