What I like about conferences is the ability to see the latest products and hear the pitches from the vendors. Yet, for all that do it, their are equal number of vendors who do not. Vendors who do not have anyone in their booth, during expo times – I see this at all shows, regardless of the product or market; but at e-learning/training shows you see it a lot OR you see them eating in their booth. There are different reasons to use different ones, but I personally would stay mainstream on authoring tools: Lectora, Articulate, Captivate, but I wouldn’t necessarily go open-source unless you’re very confident in your skill set and you have some sort of IT behind you to support you with that. So from there, we either go the route of putting it on my project calendar, so I’m going to build it for them, or we look at an outside vendor to hire them to build it.
