DevLearn 2013 Summary


In late October an annual eLearning conference dedicated to training within companies - DevLearn 2013 – was held in Las Vegas. In this article, I would like to share with you some highlights and observations from the DevLearn 2013. HapYak has been also presented at DevLearn 2013.

This week I attended my first DevLearn, and as hyped as it was in the months prior to the event, it did not disappoint. DevLearn is one of the largest events in the learning industry; according to the conference website, 1,747 people registered for the event.

New Literacies

At the Tim O'Reilly keynote at the DevLearn conference. Network effects are key to their market dominance. At DevLearn - tend to equate Web 2.0 instead it's really systems that harness network effects. Statistics. His outline is very interesting in that he's promising to talk about the "new literacies." I'm hoping this is going to be similar to Work Literacy.

Allow people to work faster, better through informal learning. eLearning 2.0 addresses informal, on-the-job. It's relatively new.

College students are the most effected by cost of any student group, averaging around $900 a year on textbooks, according to a 2010 study by Nicole Allen.

Dan wow-ed us with the simplisity of imagery for effective learning. Shouldn't we be more interested in "effective communication" no matter what form it takes? Most people that I know online are late 30's and 40+ which is NOT matching the statistics I've seen.
