An API (Application Program Interface) enables an interface from a piece of software to communicate with another piece of software (in its simplest form) or multiple pieces of software (called a mashup). Twitter has APIs, so does Facebook, even Linkedin. Examples: Post your status update in Linkedin and it appears in Twitter.

The fastest growing segment on Facebook is 55 to 65 year old women. The age range of people using social media is 35 to 54, with a college or post graduate degree. Time for these vendors to wake up, or see your audience share disappear. They do not want to jump into the water, for fear of the social learning shark.

The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. In a market this size, and with so many vendors overly focused on the U.S. Folding up shop for good – goodbye and nice knowing you. It was a myth.

I include Learning Portals, LCMSs, as part of the mix. E-commerce is standard, multi-tenet off the main system, with each distributor/wholesaler/reseller/sales agent, etc. When a vendor I am reviewing or identifying is a client of mine, it will always be noted, as such. My runner-up is Operitel’s LearnFlex LSP.

Vendors were saying, lets “wait on those&# or “our customers are not requesting them, so we are holding off&#. Social learning? If they were doing it, Facebook like page, a crummy blog that looks nothing like a real blog, a Twitter like feed, maybe RSS, text chat and YouTube functions and upload/download angle.

Revenues across the board are up, profit margins are healthy and competition is on-going (always a good thing). Illogical – I often see systems that add features that seem as though they tossed a bunch of ideas on a wall and whatever stuck up there, went into their platform. The LMS market is strong. The Negatives. Bottom Line.
