In the webinar, I brought up how LMS vendors were themselves perpetuating the myth of the bad things of social media (which is a necessary component of social learning), so, rather than identify the facts and data to potential clients who are concerned about social media and thus social learning, they instead do not include it in their system.

One vendor asked if you wanted to learn more about their product and sent you to their help desk to notify them of errors or issues with their system (hmm, not likely to buy one from these guys). Over 90% of LMS vendors had their sites available only in English; so the potential customer could not view it in any other language.

I include Learning Portals, LCMSs, as part of the mix. Extended Enterprise – System must have e-comm, multi-tenet – fully skinnable, additional functionality. That said, across the board for all Big Dog systems, their social learning functionality was weak. Social Learning is limited.

That smartphones were the answer to mobile learning. Vendors were saying, lets “wait on those&# or “our customers are not requesting them, so we are holding off&#. Social learning? Then in some circles it was the smartphones and the power of social learning with said smartphones.

I see it a lot, especially with social learning and the wonderment of some vendors of adding a “discussion forum and text chat room&# as part of their solution. Go to some vendor sites and try to figure out what exactly are they offering. Not only do you see this on their sites, but in their materials.

Two vendors who pulled this “perception” is not reality come to mind. In 2009, a well known and highly respected vendor was advertising on their site that their focus was their LMS, yet behind the scenes told me that they perceived their system as a performance management system. Bottom Line.
