Surprises in E-Learning One of the biggest surprises, is that so many folks are unaware that e-learning was an umbrella term, as I noted in the History of the LMS post. Vendors use it to refer to online courses/content. On top of that, they misspell it – the term is e-learning. Shame on them.

Everyone knows that support in the learning system space as a whole is below average. Sure there are vendors who do an exceptional job, but the fact still remains that the number one reason, people leave one learning system vendor for another is support/service. This isn’t new.

Q: You constantly mention “learning systems” rather than an LMS, LXP or Learning Platform. Q: We are looking at a talent management system, but are wondering if that qualifies under a learning system? On top of that, there are vendors out there who change the type of system, repetitively.

Every E-Learning vendor should want your business and treat you as they would want to be treated. Every LMS vendor should have a standard regarding response times, when they receive an inquiry via the internet. I know of one vendor who responds within 30 minutes of receiving an inquiry. I believe that. Very cool.

CBT Prior to online learning known then as WBT, and then the latter term of e-learning (vendors today, use it to refer to content that is online), there was CBT. CBT was the “new” and exciting way to learn. The vendor had partnerships with off-the-shelf providers. WBT (Web-Based Training).

In the past few months, many of you probably have noticed a slight uptick in to the number of vendors who have been acquired either by another vendor in the market, or outside of the e-learning space or even a Private Equity firm. From my experience, vendors do have some options. See if there any loopholes.

While I am sure that occurred at WOLC, the ones I gazed at, which were presented by vendors, had no sales pitch whatsoever, rather it was all about a specific subject tied to e-learning. I know a few vendors who had multiple meetings each day with potential clients – and the ones I am referring to where LMS vendors.
