I was recently asked me about my recommendations for conducting effective online conferences (virtual conference). We’ve used Elluminate as our webinar system. Most presenters are not used to designing for online, so it’s important to help them plan their sessions to be effective. Pictures of speakers make the event more real.

Add it to your Elluminate and WebEx profiles. A few other thoughts on this topic: In business networking, using stylized photos or anything other than a normal photorealistic picture says – I'm playful and fun, but maybe not all that serious about all this stuff. In my experience, it's not as effective to spend time with them online.

Pictures and Connection I need to do a full post on this, but I receive quite a few LinkedIn Connection requests - My LinkedIn Open Connection Approach – and it's surprising how often I will get them from people who briefly met me somewhere and they don't have a picture on their profile. They show a list of pictures.

What really rankled though with many of those present (and some of those watching via Elluminate) was his critique that academics do not question learning theories, not are they suffiently critical of them. In effect, through the use of social media and telecommunication technologies, these teachers are becoming global educators. Webinar tools include Elluminate (now known as Blackboard Collaborate), WebEx and Adobe Connect all of which have similar screen topographies and perform similar functions, but all have an associated cost.

When I give a presentation live and face to face, it is qualitatively different for me and my audience to a presentation I give through Elluminate or Adobe Connect. It's more important for us to recognise the significance of each tool, and how they can be used effectively in all their variations, and also in combinations.

So, both the webinar tool (Elluminate, WebEx, Adobe Connect, etc.) I recently complained that even after all these years, tools like Elluminate and WebEx still didn't provide the ability to have people put their pictures and other information on their profiles so you could find out more about the users.
