Those attending the PLE Conference found themselves quickly immersed in discussion, dialogue and debate over the nature and ethos of the personal learning environment. The Twitter stream alone went wild, and by midday on the second day there had been over 5000 messages inserted into the #PLE-BCN hashtag stream. I have made it up over the Alps by train into the sleepy Austrian town of Villach, where we hold the annual Interactive Computer Aided Learning Conference (ICL). Every year the ICL conference seems to be veering more toward e-learning and away from computer science, which I think is a good thing. We need to concentrate more on the learning and less on the technology - more on the pedagogy and less on 'this is the technology and this is what it does'.

I first met Graham at an event in the UK around 2006, just when I was becoming aware of the potential of social media such as wikis, blogs and social networking platforms as a learning tools. With Josie Fraser, Helen Keegan and Cristina Costa in Utrecht, 2007 Graham invited me to speak in Utrecht the following year at an event called 'Show that you Share', which in retrospect became a pivotal point in my involvement in the open learning movement.
