One of the areas that always gain interest and usage are open source systems, that is to say, free open source code (some are not), to which any organization, company, educational setting, government and so forth can build their own system (often noted as home-grown) and do what they wish with it. Not open source.

The 2011 list has now been viewed over 880,000 times ( on Slideshare ), and the 2012 list over 550,000 times ( on Slideshare ). A vote for Google will be a vote for Google Search, so if you want to vote for other Google tools, you will need to name them individually, e.g. Google Docs/Drive, Google Scholar, Google Maps, etc.

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. To hold photos, images, media files – eventually moved to word docs. Free open hard drive space – especially with video hungry files.

In 2011, I saw quite a few items that resonated. They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. Actually it already has with some end users.

When you see many of these awards from organizations – the general mass of them (but not all of them) require the vendor/company to submit an application for whatever category or categories. There is never any pay for play here – even my vendor clients are aware that they may not win best of the best. An additional note.
