Sure, it costs bugger all to copy the files, but just as with Big Pharma, the cost of development of genuinely new products is so high that it can't be ignored. At the same time, our industry is in the thrall of FOSS software - the most obvious of which is Moodle. This fairly mediocre application gets a lot of attention because of the Free label, but it's not without a great number of problems that are mainly attributable to the development model**.

Which is still a whole LOT of money. And “in times like these…” Why pay for a pricey LMS when you can Moodle or Drupal or Sakai ? Why do companies continue to pay huge dollars for products that are now being offered for free? Web conferencing services like DimDim now offer the equivalent of WebEx.... Free must mean sub par, right? Wrong. Moodle and other open source products have huge communities behind them. Talented individuals who can program like hell and believe in the open source philosophy. Support.

My new job will not use Moodle. They are transitioning from a home-grown, simple web page with a database to Skill Soft.
Moodle is well known for a slight lack of design flair in the out-of-the-box theme packs. That's fine. They still work. Often, though, we'll need to redesign the overall look and feel of a Moodle site...! Moodle is a very complex application, with many different parts of the interface that need styling. So, I always start with an existing theme and build on that. Secondly, remember that each upgrade to Moodle may add new interface elements.

No doubt this is due to the prominence of Moodle which appears to be breaking out in to mainstream consciousness - popular British computing weekly MicroMart is even carrying an article extolling its virtues this week. Moodle is of course THE open source e-learning item of the moment*1. You know something is big when it even starts to be worthy of parody , but the fact of the matter is it's a success.
to $57.02. Skillsoft enjoys greatest overall satisfaction in large corporations with a large number of learners impacted (greater than 5,000 employees and learners). 29.58% of survey respondents plan to upgrade their LMS and 10.69% plan to abandon their current LMS and move to a different vendor. Moodle (yes, Moodle) enjoys both the largest market share and satisfaction in smaller corporations with a smaller number of learners impacted (fewer than 5,000 employees and learners).

One of the first hurdles myself and other rookie Moodle implementers have to overcome is increasing the maximum file upload size. Moodle defaults to a measly 2 MB maximum file upload size which is pretty limiting. Through my research I found that many other people struggle with the same problem especially when Moodle is installed on a hosted non dedicated server which is the situation I am in.
Clive points out one of the more interesting discoveries in the survey results numbers - Moodle comes back as being used inside lots of corporations. In fact, it appears near the top in market share even among larger corporations. However, as Clive points out, this is somewhat misleading (and the report covers the difference between an CMS, LMS and TMS).
Moodle is getting more and more popular, but just how big is it? I am  even starting to hear of more corporations adopting it. My experience has been that companies were weary of using open source software, but that appears to be changing too. I decided to do some research. Here is what I found from Moodle.org .
One recent interesting development in mobile learning has been the creation of mobile interfaces for Online Learning Environments.  Here at the University of Canberra, I’ve been investigating one particular extension for the University’s new Moodle-based learning environment: the free and open source Mobile Learning Engine (MLE) . MLE provides a mobile interface to Moodle in two different ways. It features a custom Java application, capable of running on the majority of contemporary mobile phones....
