I've been exploring Ning a little further than I did and compared it to other forums like socialgo, collectivex and grou.ps. Gro.ups is open source, has a lot of similar functionalities to ning (and more- you can upload files easily) and is also without advertisements (for free!). Besides it is getting very popular.

It is free (with ads), you do not have to install anything, it is easy to manage, so you're ready in a few minutes. But what are really the options you have for online community platforms and how you do it right choices? This is not bad if everyone feels at home there, but it gives less the feeling of a home for the community or group.
