I've been exploring Ning a little further than I did and compared it to other forums like socialgo, collectivex and grou.ps. Gro.ups is open source, has a lot of similar functionalities to ning (and more- you can upload files easily) and is also without advertisements (for free!). Besides it is getting very popular.

When it comes to free cloud apps, I also share them on my blog's Free Cloud Apps page. I also like to make occasional visits to Google Labs and Adobe Labs to "keep up" with the tech tools they are working on and to test drive any beta versions available. Tagged either under Development Tools or Cloud.

A discussion forum functionality is key for this purpose, other things are nice to have but often blur the decision about the forum to choose. It is free (with ads), you do not have to install anything, it is easy to manage, so you're ready in a few minutes. It is easy and free. It's easy to set up. It does not look attractive.
