At the dawn of the video recording age, a battle raged about the best standard to use: VHS or Betamax. In it, Sony came out with a better standard, but kept it to themselves. Meanwhile, JVC’s VHS standard wasn’t quite as good, but they openly licensed it. Standards provide several benefits. Learning Standards.

The same holds true for the standards that we support and the ever changing needs of our customers. When I first joined Rustici in 2011, SCORM was the de facto standard for our customers. xAPI was a glimmer in the eye of ADL, Rustici and in particular Ben Clark, who was spearheading Project Tin Can development.

I’m thinking in particular of those who work to advance our standards. The initial learning technology standards came out from the AICC. Several other initiatives include IEEE (which is pretty much the US based effort on electric and electronic technology standards to the international stage), and the IMS efforts from academia.

Apparently, Google has recently opined that the future of mobile is web standards. I’ve been reflecting on the benefits that standards have provided. What worked for networks was the standardization on TCP/IP as a protocol for packet transmission. What worked for email was standardization on the SMTP protocol.

As we approach the end of our SCORM series, in many ways it’s just the beginning for eLearning content standards. On day one of our series, we learned that AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) can be considered the first eLearning standard, used to track how learners progress through course content.

To solve this problem, in 1999 the government tasked a small research laboratory, ADL, to “develop common specifications and standards for e-learning.” The lab combined the work of existing standards organizations like the AICC , IMS and the IEEE LTSC into a cohesive reference model.
