The ongoing work of learning standards

Litmos

At the dawn of the video recording age, a battle raged about the best standard to use: VHS or Betamax. In it, Sony came out with a better standard, but kept it to themselves. Meanwhile, JVC’s VHS standard wasn’t quite as good, but they openly licensed it. As Stephen Johnson tells us, in his book Where Good Ideas Come From , the openness of standards fosters innovation. . Standards provide several benefits. Learning Standards.

Standards and success

Clark Quinn

Apparently, Google has recently opined that the future of mobile is web standards. I’ve been reflecting on the benefits that standards have provided. What worked for networks was the standardization on TCP/IP as a protocol for packet transmission. What worked for email was standardization on the SMTP protocol. HTTP standardization has been good for the web, where it’s been implemented properly! But it’s having standards that matters.

Q&A - eLearning Standards Especially SCORM

Tony Karrer

You want to implement your courseware to the SCORM standard if you plan to have it launched and/or tracked under an LMS. SCORM is a fairly easy standard to deal with especially since most people are fine with a single SCO that does only single score/completion reporting. What about other Standards? There are a bunch of other standards by ADL (who is responsible for SCORM ), IMS , IEEE LTSC including CORDRAâ„¢ , LOM , Meta-data , etc.

Real (e)Learning Heroes

I’m thinking in particular of those who work to advance our standards. The initial learning technology standards came out from the AICC. Several other initiatives include IEEE (which is pretty much the US based effort on electric and electronic technology standards to the international stage), and the IMS efforts from academia. The Department of Defense’s ADL initiative decided upon a version, to move things forward, and thus was born SCORM.

LETSI/SCORM 2.0 Wrap Up and Thanks!

Mark Oehlert

I wonder if part of this is due in part to an out-moded model of instructional design than is focused on industrial-era units of learning like courses and isn't built from an architectural standpoint, to handle the idea of people actually learning vis systems like IM, wikis, blogs, etc. So I spent most of last week at the LETSI / SCORM 2.0 Workshop in Pensacola, FL. I used CoverItLive to do a running set of notes of the workshop and that's available here.

Im sure there will be many posts remembering Philip.there should be. Im just a bit dazed that Philip is gone - he was always there - behind the scenes - working incredibly hard and ridiculously long hours for little or no credit.

SCORM vs. LTI: what’s the difference?

Rustici Software

Now that we’re providing you even more options for exporting content, we thought it was important to outline the differences between SCORM and LTI, so you can select the eLearning standard that is right for you. LTI is focused on connecting learning systems in a standard way. It stands for Learning Tools Interoperability and it is a standard created by the IMS Global Learning Consortium. Governance: LTI is created and maintained by IMS; SCORM by ADL.

Day 5: xAPI and more – what next for SCORM?

As we approach the end of our SCORM series, in many ways it’s just the beginning for eLearning content standards. On day one of our series, we learned that AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) can be considered the first eLearning standard, used to track how learners progress through course content. While many eLearning vendors still support AICC, the standard is usually a legacy of older platforms and businesses.

AICC and SCORM Compliance: The Benefits for Your e-Learning

To solve this problem, in 1999 the government tasked a small research laboratory, ADL, to “develop common specifications and standards for e-learning.” The lab combined the work of existing standards organizations like the AICC , IMS and the IEEE LTSC into a cohesive reference model. Today, SCORM is the de facto standard for e-Learning interoperability. Another standard you may come across is AICC, although SCORM is much more predominant in the industry today.
