Selecting a system takes a lot of time, a lot of commitment on your part (and group, if applicable) and yes, even cost – the amount of time x productivity x your salary wage/time spent to find a system. The minus: vendors come out of the woodwork to tell you their system meets those needs. There is no one size fits all vendor.

This was my third TK in a row to attend, and as usual it contained some WOW on the part of some products, some “huh” on others and even a few “boos” Overall Expo Analysis. Nice selection of vendors – in general. Wi-Fi worked a lot better, but vendors and end users still had issues inside the expo hall.

Not the products – they are still the same, but rather the “anti-” that they preach is nothing more than a previous incarnation of the past, sans the message. They are the next generation of lite learning management systems and not the anti-establishment of such systems. I re-affirmed it in my forecasts for 2012.

There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market.

I saw a lot more folks than in previous shows and more e-learning vendors too. Equally there were several ILT vendors who had some type of online learning thing going on. The key I found is that these folks are unaware of the potential of e-learning and what it can do. . Vendors were in the basement.

The product comes in two flavors – a simple and a more robust. SaaS product – but here’s the thing – if you want the course to be in your LMS – it can but it still sits on the ZZ server side and not in your system (should note that the LMS connectivity is available only in the $40/u version).

SaaS – I would prefer a vendor who offers SaaS only and not a SaaS or client hosted or G-D forbid client hosted only option. The product supports mobile, which is another plus. I love the graphical charts and the analytics are solid. Notifications which can be sent through various social media; and yes e-mail and RSS too.
