So you know my perspective, since my start in e-learning I have always been both a designer and developer. Although my degree is in instructional design I have worked in corporate training departments where I am responsible for both. They provided just enough to make us dangerous with HTML, Flash, Photoshop and Authorware.

Instructional design was actually being used. The majority of people creating the courses used authoring tools, such as Authorware (difficult to learn, but robust), Dazzler Max (I used it, learning curve though), Lectora (difficult to learn) and many others that existed then. Because of the way the courses were designed.

They give you a broad overview of what you need to know and all have good visual examples of what to do. E-Learning by Design : I like to recommend this one because it covers all of the basics well. The Non-Designer’s Design Book : I like books that explain ideas and then give me good examples.

If you are an Authorware fanatic missing the old days, you are still going to miss it – because while these capabilities are being added to tools they are still not at the level of Authorware.
