Wednesday, September 05, 2007 Continuing in Second Life Im still at it. You click on the Tsunami sign and get the first "page" of the lesson -- how tsunamis are formed underwater. All this to say, Im keeping an open mind. Im ashamed to admit I havent given it a try yet, although it is on my To-Do list. Schone said.

My current business card says Im a "Manager of Instructional Design". Got accepted to a Masters program for secondary ed, but deferred. Bought a bike and took scuba lessons. And now Im here -- "Manager of Instructional Design." But at this point, Im here to stay. My point is this: I dont think Im that unusual.

"Personally, I dont like to hide things from learners and play guessing games, so I am an advocate of letting the learner know, up front, what they will be expected to do at the conclusion of the course, lesson, or whatever. Im not sure I suggested writing WIIFM learning objectives, but they probably have their uses.

School takes care of academics, they each play a sport (or 2), and they each takes lessons in some creative endeavor.guitar, piano, writing, coding, etc. Im looking forward to seeing how the skills hes learning through gaming will serve him in the other areas of his life. My theory is simple: The 3 As - academics, athletics, arts.

And by asking this, Im not suggesting that design isnt important, for it is - its seen by some as part of the pedagogy. As a teacher I knew all about Pedagogy and could create a great lesson and provide a excellent learning enviroment, I had great reviews and my students/trainees achieved great results. Im not saying to leave the info a mystery; Im saying that Ive seen a lot of elearning that seems to underestimate the intelligence of the learner and makes every little thing painfully explicit. Im not sure what to make of it, honestly. Lesson learned here. It sure pays to read the study referenced.

I come from an old-school approach: I sort of understand the technology, but I leave the graphics and programming expertise to others. The programming skills should be left to the programmers. Do you work in or favor a design shop where each person has his or her own role (ID, graphics, programming, QA)? Whats your view?
