It is better to have one “expert” avatar and another “motivational” avatar in a learning environment rather than having one combined “mentor” avatar.

Traditional formal learning environments have long placed an expert on a podium, who in turn tend to consider learners as sponges needing to absorb his/her expertise. However, learning does not only occur from an expert or mentor: the power to learn from others is also an essential force in constructivism.

Encourage these ‘rock-star instructors’ to mentor other faculty to create their first videos. Faculty can also have students create their own welcome videos, or video responses within discussion threads or forums, for increased student-to-student engagement in a quality online course. Make room for discussions. Be responsive.

Now let’s discuss some of the pluses to onsite training. One of the benefits we discussed for offsite training is using an outside facilitator for a course if you don’t have one on staff. And setting up a company mentoring program is a great company benefit. Speaker podium or dedicated area for instructor. Saving time.
