The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. Folding up shop and switching to a new market: Talent/Performance Management, new product lines not tied to e-learning, services. It was a myth.

Here is just a few of ones I like, that are unique and you could use in your LMS/LCMS/CMS, Learning Portal (caveat: your vendor must be able to accept APIs, otherwise it won’t work). Social Media Solutions that have multiple APIs built in their system, basically they are a mashup in a sense. Social Learning?

OmniSocial is a social learning platform, with learning management capabilities and with the ability to select individual apps in the system and only use those you select to install onto your web site or learning portal.

I include Learning Portals, LCMSs, as part of the mix. Open Source Systems – That have to be 100% free to be considered. Extended Enterprise – System must have e-comm, multi-tenet – fully skinnable, additional functionality. Categories. Big Dog LMS. Saba does a good job as well.

In the webinar, I brought up how LMS vendors were themselves perpetuating the myth of the bad things of social media (which is a necessary component of social learning), so, rather than identify the facts and data to potential clients who are concerned about social media and thus social learning, they instead do not include it in their system.

These are your pressing reqs and most systems offer them as standards. I often hear people say they want mobile learning in their solution, social learning, e-commerce, but when you ask for specifics they sometimes have a blank stare on their face. Move forward – not at the speed which you want because it takes time to learn TinCan, make sure it works and then implement it into their system. When a system offers performance management or talent management features (which IMO is now the same) two spins occur. It is included in the system at no charge.

While their continues to be a slight increase in providing tech support and service for free (at least one year), the same cannot be said for e-commerce. It has become an add-on fee for many vendors, and even worse, many of whom have an “extended enterprise&# or multi-tenet system (or advertise that option). Bonus Trend.
