eLearning 24-7

Unfortunately, too many vendors in the e-learning space have failed to see the power and potential of this capability, and have decided to ignore them. An API (Application Program Interface) enables an interface from a piece of software to communicate with another piece of software (in its simplest form) or multiple pieces of software (called a mashup). Twitter has APIs, so does Facebook, even Linkedin. Facebook. Mashups. Facebook like features?

I include Learning Portals, LCMSs, as part of the mix. Please remember for TM or as some vendors like to pitch as “performance management or knowledge management&# , the modules are extra and are not part of the system (at least for now). the ability to have their own system off that initial system, with own look and feel, and features that can be turned on or off at the top tiered level or at each sub system level (depending on the vendor’s system).

What’s hurting the LMS market

eLearning 24-7

Revenues across the board are up, profit margins are healthy and competition is on-going (always a good thing). Make no mistake, there are plenty of vendors out there who believe in the concept of focusing on features and forgetting about usability, under the guise that people would rather have lots of cool blinky things rather than usability. There are a plethora of vendors out there, with blinders on. . Yet, many vendors are doing exactly that.

eLearning 24-7

As social learning continues to grow, LMS/LCMS vendors are taking various approaches. LMS/LCMS vendors are following one of three approaches when it comes to social learning. In any other market, the goal is to be number one, yet for whatever reason, in this market when it comes to social learning, there are a significant number of vendors, who would rather just sit on the sidelines. The fastest growing segment on Facebook is 55 to 65 year old women.

Identify the problem, the vendor too.

eLearning 24-7

The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. In a market this size, and with so many vendors overly focused on the U.S. and not necessarily worldwide (which should be the case), there is bound to be those vendors who are seeking new opportunities. Folding up shop for good – goodbye and nice knowing you.

Social Learning, Social Media – Brothers in Arms

eLearning 24-7

Is it me or does it seem that most vendors in the LMS/LCMS market still believe that with some smoke and mirrors, you won’t realize that social media actually must be integrated into social learning for it to exist? After all, many have a blog, wiki, rss feed, a Facebook like page, with profile, inc. expo clearly shows and some argue that social media some grew up within the web 2.0 With APIs and mashups, who knows where it can go.
