Two Years of xAPI

MakingBetter

Sunday, April 26, marked two years since xAPI was released. That didn’t lead to an enduring success like xAPI. In its first year following xAPI’s release, innovative practitioners and teams began their experiments and proofs-of-concept with xAPI. Their sharing of stories caught steam and by November 2014 we began to see just want was happening in xAPI’s second year. Beyond May, what’s to come with and around xAPI is nothing short of extraordinary.

What is Connections: xAPI?

MakingBetter

UPDATE: Connections: xAPI is cancelled for March 2015. We simply don’t have the capacity at this time to deliver the event we want to host and the experience you as a participant deserve. We may well do something like a conference or a “camp” around xAPI and as we get ready, if you’re on our mailing list or contact us , we’ll keep you posted. The full Connections: xAPI site is up!

Captivate and xAPI

Adobe Captivate

eLearning brothers has been hosting an event and last week was all about xAPI. They had a great course on Captivate and xAPI. It would be great to see Captivate make adding custom xAPI statements easier. I’ve been experimenting with creation, upload to ScormCloud and evaluating the xAPI statements but the ability to get things right into an LRS with analytics capabilities would be great. Torrance Learning

We recently hosted a group of about 30 clients, friends, and colleagues at an xAPI party (because nothing says “celebration” like verb definitions and data filtering). As the day drew to a close, many of us came to the same conclusion: we need more examples of xAPI in the real world so we can see what works and what doesn’t and so we can have credible examples for those who are contemplating this new way of tracking learning but haven’t yet taken the leap.

Last week, I wrote a little bit about the xAPI Camp we’re putting together through Connections Forum. Today, details about xAPI Camp are online including our initial set of speakers, sponsors and an agenda. The Campfire presentations are short talks about how organizations are leveraging xAPI and the problems they’re solving. Our speakers are implementing xAPI solutions with healthcare providers, universities, energy companies, government services and military.

xAPI Camp – DevLearn 2015 is ONE DAY AWAY

The first xAPI Camp at DevLearn, the first of four events we’re putting on hosted by The eLearning Guild , is nigh upon us. The Guild helped us launch xAPI at mLearnCon back in 2012 and they have been a steadfast supporter of xAPI. Last year was the first year there was an official xAPI Track at DevLearn and, together, we are upping that ante again (…in Vegas). We may even be doing karaoke Tuesday night, after xAPI Camp, because that is how we roll.

Since last year, I worked with IEEE to standardize the Experience API (xAPI) specification. Most of my work is with the IEEE-LTSC but recently a few other IEEE standards groups expressed interest in using xAPI. They’re looking at xAPI because it provides a way to share data across devices, related to people, in a way other systems can understand. This is exciting stuff for everyone with a hand in making xAPI what it is. Second, an xAPI Camp is happening.

ATD Learning Technologies

Essentially, xAPI (Experience API) is typically viewed by learning and development (L&D) professionals as a tool to help with: tracking learning where learners go, not just in the LMS. These are all great reasons to use xAPI, but they don’t always resonate with key stakeholders in other parts of the business. In order to gain traction in the larger organization, L&D professionals need to answer the question of “Why xAPI?”

Package & track elearning: why companies need both AICC & xAPI

Docebo

AICC and xAPI (Experience API, or formerly Tin Can) are among the most important standards: whilst AICC has been around for a while, the xAPI is relatively recent. Those catalogs are extensive but also really expensive to update, and this is why these vendors are not able to adopt new technologies in short timeframes – as switching to a new standard would mean a complete revision of all the training content hosted on the catalog. From Tin Can to xAPI: a core called LRS.

Clarifying how xAPI relates to platforms, monitoring and testing

Experience API

Recently, we received an inquiry from someone who was trying to make sense of xAPI. Is xAPI installed on a platform? When it comes to how xAPI relates to platforms, xAPI is a communication and data model protocol specification that defines a Learning Record Store (or LRS). An LRS implementation is an application that can either be a premised web service or a remotely hosted (public- or non-public web service). Can xAPI monitor device activity?

Securing Your xAPI Statements in JavaScript

xAPI unlocks many new possibilities for learners to engage in learning without the traditional cumbersome process of logging in to an LMS to have access to eLearning content. That’s why it’s important to make sure the server or host we’re using for our xAPI project enforces https as well. For credentials and Basic Auth with xAPI – we recommend using a wrapper like ADL’s xAPI Wrapper. RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^learningdojo.net [NC].

A Glance Back at xAPI; A Look Ahead at Data Ownership

” Well, my objectives with xAPI were the following: Enable data interoperability across systems. Looking at what Megan and I are implementing with xAPI, I have to call out where, in practice, the tools conforming to the spec aren’t helping with data ownership. There’s a group hosted by ADL that is working towards this. To do this, people are designing patterns of interactions within (and across) content items to be tracked with xAPI.
