Both Jive and Snagit were rendered inoperable by the latest update of Yosemite for the Mac. I snooped around a little and found that you can replicate what Jive did with QuickTime. Here’s a QuickTime movie I made this afternoon: Aha! Recordings show a black screen with a blinking cursor. Nothing else.

You can do this by using tools like Camtasia or QuickTime (you may need to download a plugin to record both audio and video). If you use a Mac, you can use Quicktime or iMovie. GoToTraining, WebEx, and Adobe Connect all record live sessions to video formats, such as mp4. My advice is to balance convenience and cost.

If you need to simply trim some fat from a video you can easily get away with using ‘free’ tools, like Quicktime or Movie Maker. 264 file (the most popular option), make sure the Timeline panel is active and choose File > Export > Media or press Control+M (Windows) or Command+M (Mac OS). Or it could be Camtasia because it’s extremely versatile unless you’re going for free in which case on a Mac iMovie is quite sufficient. If you’re on a Mac then you could have used Quicktime to record your screen and perhaps iMovie to edit the video. Some are free and others cost money.
