For the past month, I have been conducting a survey on learning platforms and specifically learning management systems. . The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems.

The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. In a market this size, and with so many vendors overly focused on the U.S. Folding up shop for good – goodbye and nice knowing you. It was a myth.

Revenues across the board are up, profit margins are healthy and competition is on-going (always a good thing). But for all that is positive, there are negatives, and these negatives can hinder long term growth for commercial systems. They are necessary for the evolution of any system and mandatory to garner more market share.

I want to make something very clear – Moodle and other open source LMSs, Learning Portals, CMSs, etc. More of a course management system, than a LCMS/LMS as they try to push it. Help materials within the system are awful. APIs and mashups – which is really can expand Moodle to the next level of learning.

I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers. Especially, when vendors released their 2010 final numbers and saw big increases from the previous year.
