I blogged about this before on LCB - The Innovator's Dilemma of Learning , but the recent discussion in Product Vendor Blogs - Where are They? If anything, I would expect right now that the biggest shift will be towards more free, open-source solutions that provide roughly the same functionality that are in the commercial tools today.

They’ve hit a wall with features that don’t accomplish what a vendor promised. LMS vendors have vastly different licensing models.

There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market.

Please remember for TM or as some vendors like to pitch as “performance management or knowledge management&# , the modules are extra and are not part of the system (at least for now).

I admit have the time when I look at a few from the larger name entities, I can’t figure out how that vendor got to that part of that grid, what in the heck does that mean, and why is that vendor who isn’t even a learning system, appearing in that section of the grid over there? I’m not sure why people love grids.

SumTotal Learning Management – They have come a long way. I readily admit for the longest time I was not a fan of SumTotal, but that was then, this is now. A lot of potential and a vendor to watch in 2020. They are on F indAnLMS.com. And they need to offer more flexibility when it comes to certificate management.

comparison of a system that focuses on SMB vs another that is SMB, rather than SMB vs. 50,000+ employees; equally, someone focusing only on B2B/B2C should be compared to other vendors only focused on B2B/B2C and not say comparing an internal only system to one that is B2B/B2C, because there will be some functionality differentials).

This isn’t the same as a user case study you see on vendors websites (which btw are nothing more than marketing materials wrapped up in a “research” like angle. What is the roadmap of the vendor and track record of meeting the new functionality/capability? Same thing with white papers. Wonderful marketing materials.

Top Three Open Source LMSs of 2013-14. One of these vendors is listed in my top 50. Moodle - Whether you like it or not, the system still reigns supreme for free open source. Never assume that they know the terminology in the industry, nor assume that what you think one term means, doesn’t necessarily mean what the vendor thinks it means. In the Enterprise and Large Enterprise it is not uncommon to get pricing that is quite high, especially if the vendor knows procurement is involved.

I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers.
