External blogs have a lot more flexibility and power for different kinds of writing: journals, conversations, videos, etc. With a blog in a walled garden, I don’t think you’re ever going to get the same kind of discussion and connections as you would with a blog exposed to the outside world.

I love the serendipity of the web. I have seen this happen again and again when interacting on the web—learning, lurking, contributing and participating. And as John Hagel said, we shape serendipity. To quote Yossi Vardi , “ Serendipity doesn’t just happen in a serendipitous way. You have to work for it.”
