Online Learning Works – So Why are Schools Failing at it?

E-Learning (the actual term) for online education started in 1993. In the late 90’s led by Blackboard, more institutions of higher education and even some schools were joining the online learning experience. An estimated 700,000 students (K-12) took at least one online course in 2005-2006 (Piccano and Seaman, 2007).

Research undertaken by the National Center for Education Statistics revealed that, between 2002 and 2005, 65% more K-12 students enrolled in online distance learning programs. More and more educational resources began to emerge from this point, including BlackBoard in 1997 and SmartThinking in 1999.
