The initial person who thought buying SumTotal was a great idea (initially it was) and then dumped it for a fortune to Skillsoft (another great idea), which in turn was someone at Skillsoft thinking this was a great idea, which turned out to be false and was a factor in Skillsoft going into bankruptcy due to the albatross known as SumTotal.

There have been lots of good comments and discussion on the post Test SCORM Courses with an LMS : eLearning Technology. The basic issue covered in the post was how to test SCORM courses prior to loading on a given LMS (e.g., Docent, SumTotal, Saba, Learn.com, etc.). Well worth looking at some of them. Other fun tidbits AICC was the leader here, then came SCORM. SumTotal – Today? Owned by SumTotal – who ruined it, because by then it was GeoLearning Maestro (not that great). The freebie does not offer SCORM nor monitoring, but has social learning, assessment tool inc. Learn.com is now called Taleo. GeoLearning’s Maestro product is now called SumTotal Maestro. Edu 2.0 – follows the same approach that Schoology offers. Corporate Side. Plateau is now called SuccessFactors. LMS Demo Shop.

Anyway, social exists in the platform, along with a built in authoring tool and the system is SCORM course standard. . If I was to compare the Big Dog Four – SuccessFactors, Saba, Cornerstone OnDemand and SumTotal by Skillsoft, Saba would win hands down. SumTotal by Skillsoft. SCORM yes – AICC?

For the past several years during selection I've found that they trail Saba and SumTotal on needed capabilities and they were hard to use for particular tasks that were important to the clients involved.
