This perspective is valid from a management and control standpoint, but antithetical to the way in which most people learn today. LMS' like WebCT, Blackboard, and Desire2Learn offer their greatest value to the organization by providing a means to sequence content and create a manageable structure for instructors/administration staff.

In the UK at least we have in the past made a clear distinction between the LMS and the virtual learning environment (VLE). are for corporates who want to manage all (or at least all formal) aspects of their learning and development. LMSs (Saba, SumTotal, SkillPort, etc.) Interesting times.
