You can buy a big system that does all (like Blackboard, Sumtotal, Saba, Cornerstone on demand, et cetera) or you can go for a bunch of specialized tools that will beat that big solution on every specialty. Old school e-leaning tools need to be installed on your computer or even worse on your company servers. No installed software.

We did Online Learning in the 60’s – False Narrative There were systems back in the day, where they could be run on your own server, used via a CD-ROM, via WAN or LAN, but to me, that isn’t and e-learning LMS. SumTotal – Today? SumTotal called it SumTotal Maestro. It was text, that’s it.

A vendor who made not only poor business decisions with the likes of Percipio, but also with the monumental blunder of acquiring SumTotal. . The buy was a bad relationship in the making, one where the owner – “Skillsoft” and ownee “SumTotal” never seemed to get on track with one another. That’s it.

Features include: Extended enterprise – multiple children/sub-portals, each skinned/branded and each on a separate server – many EEs are on a shared server. If this is something you are looking for – i.e. a HCM, then they are the ones to go with – over Cornerstone, Oracle-Taleo, SumTotal and alike.

I will zig back and forth, not staying with the typical linear method so many folks find endearing. I found that of concern, especially when server crashes were constant. The content even with content publishers, beyond just aggregators sits on their servers and not say, the learning system. You desire that?
