Challenge to Learn

You can buy a big system that does all (like Blackboard, Sumtotal, Saba, Cornerstone on demand, et cetera) or you can go for a bunch of specialized tools that will beat that big solution on every specialty. Old school e-leaning tools need to be installed on your computer or even worse on your company servers. Here are the lessons learned. Do not go for the all-in-one solutions!

Q&A from Blog Readers on E-Learning

eLearning 24-7

Q : I am curious on why Cornerstone On Demand, Saba and SumTotal do not appear in your top twenty lists even though they appear on other sites as the best products in the market. It used to be that people would mention CoD, SumTotal and Saba when they were looking at those three platforms – at least to me they would – but nowadays, I don’t hear that. I always hear “I’m looking at SumTotal, CoD, Expertus”, when folks mention it to me. Nowadays, it isn’t – although I’m sure SumTotal would disagree. Next!

While there is nothing wrong with seeking the golden goose, and even catching it a few times, if you do not have the server bandwidth to do so, nor the internal support and capabilities to handle it, how long do you think they will remain? People do this all the time, with web conferencing solutions that are not integrated into their system, or video being streamed on another server, etc. I am still hearing of problems with Captivate 5 and SumTotal. Hopefully, SumTotal will release an update to solve this. There is Money in those Hills. They were not alone. Months.

Psst. You wanna buy some features?

SaaS – the norm, what no longer is the norm – hosted on the client’s servers only. People often ask me why I seem to dog the big players in the space, ala SumTotal, Cornerstone and alike. LMS vendors are continuing to add some very unique features in an effort to set themselves apart from the competition. These expand past the standard feature sets, which I call 90/10. This is to say that 90% of features most folks seek are nearly universal in a LMS – low cost or otherwise. Sure there are exceptions, but they are exceptions to the rule. We Will Rock You.

Adobe Captivate

My last post mentioned the way to set up an owned server, for getting the Captivate quiz results. This blog highlights the new Results analysis tool, which can be used to view the results stored on your servers. The authors had to use some LMS (SumTotal, NetDimensions, Moodle, etc) OR the Email reporting feature of Adobe Captivate. of server locations to view the results.

Systems that are only available as hosted on your own servers are starting to significantly decline. Equally of interest, are the increase in open source systems that offer for a fee, hosting on their own servers, rather than on yours. Now some of these systems will offer hosted on your own servers – if you demand it – but their goal is to have it “in the cloud” What about Extended Enterprise or academia/education? Oh, they offer SaaS for a fee, but you can host it on your own servers for free. Ahh, how things have changed. What do you do?

Answering your LMS Questions

eLearning 24-7

Q: Saba, SumTotal, Cornerstone, Taleo, SuccessFactors must be the best because a lot of people buy these systems. A: If the LMS is available only as a hosted solution – as on your company’s own servers – it may not. How many of you have posted questions regarding LMSs on Quora, Linkedin or the various other social media sites available on the net? How many of you have had hundreds of comments as a result of these questions, and than rather than solve it, create only more confusion? How many of you have seen vendors respond to your questions? I need a LMS. A: Yes.
