The spelling of “eLearning” has never truly been standardized, but it’s agreed that it describes learning that takes place through electronic devices. Will xAPI be the one standard that is “the” standard? At one time, you could be “certified” with AICC and yes certified with SCORM, but why would you want to be? I’ve never heard someone say, “Sheesh, I need an LMS that is SCORM certified, or what your authoring tool is not AICC certified?

And as with all his books it is very practical, it is not just theory, but he shares a lot of practical stuff based on his vast experience. called the XAPI. To make things worse we also had competitive standards (Scorm and AICC). XAPI is a real revolution for learning. I wrote a book review on this one.

From API to xAPI, the words we use everyday can be complex and confusing. AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee): The first official eLearning content standard, AICC was developed by the Aviation Industry CBT Committee in 1993 as a CD-ROM based standard.

One of the most interesting items which presents to me an unknown variable is CMI-5, a compliance standard (formally with AICC) now headed up by ADL. Standard adoption takes time (as we can see with xAPI), so if you are concerned or worried about having to go with CMI-5, etc. – don’t. – don’t.
