Right now Im sitting in the audience listening Deborah Adler, the designer whos Masters Thesis became the redesigned Target pharmacy bottles - Clear RX. I think the big take-away from this session is that she began with a problem, people taking the wrong medicine, and then selected as her starting point - the user - not the system.

There is also the power for harm to come in here if for instance, the people practicing ethnography have not been properly trained in certain key aspects of field work such as acknowledging and mediating the affect of biases whether or not those biases are personal or theoretical. I think the heart of this is echoed by other comments on Stephens post and that is that while people may demonstrate preferences - all things being equal - toward one medium or another - these preferences are like personality traits and as KK asserts "a preference does not imply exclusivity." A culture of critique (done right and well) will benefit us personally, professionally and will create a stronger industry and better experiences for our clients. I have received my share of critiques and am better for them (its kinda like a knife being sharpened on a stone - it might not always be pleasant but you always come away sharper).
