I said a similar thing in a comment on Tony Karrers blog the other day: Isnt the main tool of the PLE our very own little brains? Tony came back talking about all the tools he uses as an extension of his brain. Late, we go back to our various storage facilities for all the hard-core processing we do with our brains.

In the session I took with him at the eLearning Guild event, he talked about multiple representations as a way to forge stronger pathways of memory in the brain. A humble learning moment for this instructional designer. Im pretty skeptical of learning styles stuff, frankly (and justifiably). We got Wii!

I can see how theorists might argue that reading text aloud to the learner addresses multiple "learning styles," but the real-world experience is one of frustration: you want to read ahead but you cant because the narrator reads more slowly than you do. Im with you. But I just thought that was my learning style. Youre right.

Sometimes you just follow the recipe -- perhaps using a rapid eLearning Template tool and a solid ISD model. Now Im not saying that SMEs are rats, or instructional designers are rats. I like how you really extended the metaphor, Cammy, and I most definitely agree that instructional design isnt brain surgery. Even a rat.

Mixed visual-auditory stimuli have an underadditive effect, so that if you have to do both at the same time, total brain activation goes down. In Ruth Clarks book e-Learning and the Science of Instruction , we learned not to ask a channel to multi-task. Im not sure what to make of it, honestly. Lesson learned here.
