The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. Folding up shop and switching to a new market: Talent/Performance Management, new product lines not tied to e-learning, services. It was a myth.

Majority of employees access a LMS or Learning Portal out of the workplace. Now, why doesn’t a vendor mention this information to a potential client, at least the first point – I can understand holding off on the second point, for selling purposes. LMS vendors who are moving into the Talent Management Space.

A surprisingly number of vendors who offer some form of social learning, whether it is the minimum – a FB like page, micro-blog, even some form of app sharing or collaborative tool, do not have any social media on their site. Why would I want to do business with you, when you are not even using any form of social media?

HP Slate already is in the market, runs on Windows7, but targets the business market. E-Learning 24/7. Samsung Galaxy S is expected to be the first real challenger to the iPad, it runs on Android OS, offers Flash 10.1 launches on Verizon on November 11th, has features including camera, web cam, etc.

Some common traits include: Broadway Effect: Front end looks too busy, end users cannot figure out what to click, where to go, what to avoid – lots of information, flashiness, overload of the senses. While this is understandable, they forget that they are in the business to land new customers too.

Rather, “partner&# is a dual revenue steam for the vendor and their partner – a business relationship deal. If you can, go with the price the LMS vendor offered you. In this case, I have always scored a better deal with the 3rd party vendor directly, then the LMS vendor. Typically there is no cost.

The twist to all this, is that for the Big Dog vendors or those whose main target is large size clients, this isn’t an issue – okay, not the Q/A, in fact, it is a big problem for many of them – rather it is inability to handle the client base. It’s a business marketplace for buyers and sellers. Accepts any courses built in any content authoring tools that are SCORM & AICC compliant – so you can upload and sell your courses that you built in Articulate, Captivate, even open source authoring tools (but they must be standards compliant). OpenSesame is not a LMS.
