I’m really excited to report that the next major release of Adobe Captivate has launched. Adobe has made the decision to break from the product numbers of the past and now simply call the product Adobe Captivate 2017 Release. There was no way to modify the closed captioning window size in previous versions.

Notes: Price: Captivate is the most affordable at $899, with a subscription model that is even more affordable if you only use Captivate occasionally or if you upgrade every year. Their version 11 release out later this year will make it even more usable.) Captivate, in my opinion, suffers from feature creep.

About two weeks ago Captivate 10, now labeled Captivate 2017 was released. In previous versions this dialog box had only 3 items. Captivate 9 was the first release which could be used on retina screens. After the capture process you had to edit that same file again to be able to use Captivate on that screen.

Studio ’13 is a very nice upgrade that features new Engage templates, additional quiz questions (including drag-and-drop), feedback layers, HTML5 publishing, characters, and a unified player, among other things. ( Studio ’09 could not output to HTML5, so it was a non-starter for iOS delivery. But I won’t give Captivate a 4.

The Issues: The evolution to HTML5 has created a need to convert projects to HTML5 compliant works. My particular case is that I have 512 pre-quiz assessments that use 3-4 Rollover Captions where the question is on the screen and users hover the mouse over the question to see the answer. I’m hooked!

Less known are the actions that can be triggered when a Quiz is completed (Passed/Failed). Since that object is no longer supported for HTML5 output, I took it out of the table. However the events for the hotspots in a VR project or 360 image/video are more limited as are the overlay Quiz slides in a VR project.

Whenever a comparison of eLearning authoring tools is published, Captivate still is considered to be the best tool for creation of software tutorials. That has been indeed the primary goal when Captivate was released many years ago. I have been choosing it many years ago (with version 1) for that feature as well.

Right now im struggeling to 1) publish my project as a html-only version and get it to work on moodle (optimally with LMS SCORM 1.2). A second Issue im Having ist that suddenly, 2) my preview (full project) and published versions only show slides 1-10 and the rest of the slides (approx. inherit the code to use flash as well.

At the moment the results don’t track to the reporting, but for flash cards or videos intermingled with knowledge checks, it’s a great avenue to explore. He has an evaluation quiz there to test your level of language learning (from Spanish to English) and that helps him diagnose the level of course to introduce students to.

One exception: embedded buttons on Quiz/Score slides cannot be shape buttons, so I use transparent buttons for those. In version 11.5 SVG as Button. Size of the SVG: about 75Kb.
